The essence of this artwork is encapsulated in the prose poem above; a ring of 24 glyphs, each representing a word’s energy, follows the journey along the circumference. The circular compass holds the watery space, protecting the creature within. The turtle, as symbol of an individual (me, you…) and Gaia (planet Earth), descends into a dark, liminal experience, where time, space and known reality dissolves.  Many myths (Odysseus, Persephone, Inanna), speak to this process of periodic renewal; evolution along the soul’s path is only possible when one submerges into shadow territory, which reveals dead, crusty, outdated beliefs, stories and behaviors. If resisted, we continue to half-exist in Maya, the illusory field we call reality. Cycles are coinciding, creating the chaos and pressure we are all feeling to change. Frightening? Yes. Dissolution challenges our need for an identifiable self.  But as all great sages suggest, it is essential to get at the beauty that lies within.
